VMware vCenter
Collect your VMs, clusters and resources inventory from VMware vCenter
The VMware vCenter connector allows you to centralize your virtual machine inventory, ESXi clusters and IT resources from your VMware infrastructure.
Objective
The VMware vCenter connector retrieves the following information:
- Virtual machine (VM) inventory
- Clusters and ESXi hosts (configurations, status)
- Resources (CPU, RAM, storage, network)
Prerequisites
- Access to VMware vCenter Server with read permissions
- Credentials for a vCenter user with appropriate permissions
- Network access to vCenter server (HTTPS port 443)
Information to provide in OverSOC

Procedure
Create a vCenter service account
- Log in to vCenter Server with an administrator account.
- Go to Administration > Users and Groups.
- Create a new user:
- Username:
oversoc-service - Password: Generate a strong password
- Username:
- Click Create.
Assign permissions
- In vCenter, go to Administration > Roles.
- Create a custom role
OverSOC-Readwith permissions:- Datastore: Browse datastore
- Host: View configuration
- Virtual machine: View configuration
- Resource: Query virtual machines
- Select the root Datacenter.
- Go to Add Permission and assign the
OverSOC-Readrole to theoversoc-serviceuser. - Verify that Propagate to children is checked.
Configure the connector in OverSOC
- In OverSOC, go to Data Sources Settings > Sources.
- Select VMware vCenter and click Configure.
- Fill in the required fields:
- vCenter Server URL: Complete URL of your vCenter server
- Username: Service account created
- Password: Account password
- API Version: Leave empty for auto-detection (optional)
- Click Test Connection to verify connectivity.
- Click Save Configuration.
Required Permissions
Minimum permissions required for the service account:
- Read virtual machine inventory
- Read cluster and host configurations
- View CPU, RAM and storage resources
- Access to datastores
